Critical Acclaim

JS 100 James Suckling 2020 vintage Friday, September 9, 2022

An insane nose that makes you feel on top of the world. You need to pour this in the glass at least one hour in advance, and then it gradually starts to talk more and more, getting better and better, offering beautiful aromas of crushed violets, wild flowers, minerals, crushed blueberries, dark cherries and hints of spice, lard and moss. Great depth to both the nose and palate. Juicy and composed, with so many tiny grains of ultra-fine tannin that seep through during the subtle yet endless finish. Lingers for minutes. Drink now if you want, but decant it properly. Better after 2025.

JS 100 James Suckling 2021 vintage Monday, October 9, 2023

Take your time to appreciate this beauty. This is different from the richer and more opulent 2020, instead, it is more mineral, with a rather thick shield of minerality that makes it feel ethereal yet protective. Finely ground white pepper, violets, herbs and a hint of bacon and slate to the blue and red berries. Medium to full body on the palate with melted tannins and a long, bracing finish. Such energy, flair and harmony here. Can’t expect more. Drink or hold. (Zekun Shuai)

RP 99 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

2020 was a low-yielding year because of mildew, so there are only 1,441 bottles of the 2020 L’Ermita, which reflects the variability in the old Garnacha vines. It was produced with a blend of 92% Garnacha, 7% Cariñena and 1% Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and PX. The difference between this and the 2020 Les Aubaguetes is the finesse and subtleness of L’Ermita and the class and quality of the tannins. L’Ermita carries the category of Gran Vinya Classificada, the top of the official vineyard classification in Priorat.

RP 99 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2021 vintage

The 2021 L’Ermita is a legend in the making, with 13.9% alcohol, the lowest ever, mind-boggling finesse and detail, purity, symmetry, elegance and great freshness that makes it vibrant with a low pH of 3.31 and 6.18 grams of acidity. These parameters should make it long-lived, and the wine is going to be vibrant and develop citrus nose of grapefruit and orange peel. It’s a powerful wine with plenty of energy, abundant tannins, even more fine and elegant than those from the 2020 I tasted next to it, and with great balance. It has a high percentage of Cariñena, much higher than the 2020, and comes down to 75% Garnacha, 24% Cariñena and 1% whites. They expect to produce some 2,800 bottles of this 2021 in April 2023. Prices will be increased around 16%.
