Critical Acclaim
Lastly, both reds I was able to taste from bottle showed brilliantly. The slightly larger production 2019 Saint Joseph has a Côte Rôtie-like perfume of black raspberries, blackberries, flowers, new leather, and pepper, and it has good acidity, medium to full body, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
A bit darker in hue and fruit than the fun, charming 2018, Perret’s 2019 Saint Joseph verges on being too serious, with a dusty touch of tannin on the finish. Smoky and spicy up front, with notes of black cherries and cassis, it’s full-bodied, rich and velvety, easily capable of aging a few years and drinking well through 2030 or so.
Deep-pitched black/blue fruit aromas are energized by cracked pepper and smoky mineral notes. Densely packed bitter cherry, cassis, licorice and candied violet flavors reveal a hint of olive on the back half. Chewy tannins add grip to a long, smoky finish that leaves a dark chocolate note behind.
