Critical Acclaim

JD 99 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 vintage 8/30/2023

The EABA is more Syrah-dominated and checks in as 65% Syrah, 22% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache, and the rest Viognier that saw plenty of stems and close to two years in 50% new French oak. Its inky purple hue is followed by a sensational bouquet of bloody blue fruits, black raspberries, iron, ground pepper, baking spices, and who knows what else. Incredibly complex and nuanced (yet intense) aromatically, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, concentrated mouthfeel, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s certainly one of the biggest, richest wines in the lineup, yet like all of Jim’s wines, it remains light on its feet, has brilliant purity of fruit, and is as drinkable as could be. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP 98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

The 2020 Eaba explodes from the glass with very pure scents of violet, star anise, boysenberry and black cherry complemented by wafts of coffee beans, Castelvetrano olives and currant leaves. The palate is enveloping and luxurious with loads of velvety tannins, highly concentrated perfumed fruit and youthful streaks of new oak spice. It retains plenty of juicy acidity, which balances the wine and highlights its detailed spice and floral accents on the epically long finish. 780 cases and a few magnums were made. With patience, this may reach a “perfect” zenith.

JD 97 Jeb Dunnuck 2018 vintage 8/26/2021

The 2018 Eaba is another wine from Jim that puts its foot firmly on the ripeness pedal and offers a blockbuster-like style of ripe black fruits, wood smoke, cured meats, and peppery goodness. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it’s flawlessly balanced, has gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years or so. The 2018 is 59% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Viognier, aged 22 months in 50% new French oak. (Jeb Dunnuck)

VN 95 Vinous 2018 vintage Oct 2021

The 2018 EABA is another impressive wine in this range. Ample and explosive in the glass, the 2018 hits the palate with masses of dark fruit, chocolate, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol. Bright savory accents from the 60% stems lend energy and freshness. EABA is mostly Bien Nacido fruit, with dollops from White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke and Alta Mesa. (Antonio Galloni)

RP 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2018 vintage Oct 7, 2021

Deep purple-black, the nose opens with boisterous, rip-snorting scents of plum preserves, blackberry pie, licorice and wild sage, giving way to underlying nuances of candied violets, espresso and charcuterie. The full-on, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with decadent black and blue fruit preserves layers, framed by bright acidity and beautifully plush tannins, finishing long and spicy. Yum! (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
