That Sherry finish contributes so much: the bright copper-penny color, the lush aromas of burnt orange and raisin and the smooth, full-bodied texture. Seriously handsome copper/auburn color; perfect purity. First aromatic impressions include hazelnuts, sherry, light honey and sawdust; after another seven minutes of aeration, the aroma turns into a bouquet that’s surprisingly fruity, nutty and vanilla-like; the most sophisticated aroma of the otherwise rustic Brugal portfolio. Entry is spot-on as developed flavors of sherry, dark toffee, vanilla wafer and chocolate covered cherry; midpalate is silky smooth, medium-long and fully endowed with tastes of candied walnut, cinnamon, clove, Christmas season fruit cake, honey and brown sugar. Concludes long, moderately oily, peppery and full of baking spices. An intrepid departure from the normally earthy style of Brugal and one that will be considered more of a broad range people pleaser because of the sherry oak influence, but the reality is this rum is lip-smacking delicious.
