Critical Acclaim

JS 96 James Suckling 2020 vintage Sunday, May 14, 2023

So perfumed and subtle with roses, lavender, sage, and currants. Medium-bodied. So much Spanish cedar, cigar box, currants, fresh tobacco and spice. Classic Lafite character. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% merlot. Better after 2028. (James Suckling)

JS 96 James Suckling 2022 vintage

Attractive, showing blackcurrants, lead pencil and flowers such as lavender and violets on the nose, as well as tobacco. Medium-bodied and juicy with firm and linear tannins that are rather endless. Impressive stones and chalkiness. Excellent length and crunchiness. 53% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Drink in three or four years.

WE 95 Wine Enthusiast 2020 vintage 4/1/2023

This is a very fine second wine. Its powerful tannins and rich structure show complexity as well as freshness and acidity. The wine’s density promises much over the long term. Drink from 2027. (Roger Voss)

WE 94 Wine Enthusiast 2021 vintage 7/1/2024

Cherries and ripe black-currants give this second-label wine a generous, open character. It is succulent with rich tannins and pure black-currant acidity. This is sure to age well. Drink from 2028. (Roger Voss)

JD 94 Jeb Dunnuck 2022 vintage

The 2022 Carruades De Lafite is beautifully balanced and has that classic Lafite elegance in its aromatics and overall mouthfeel. Sweet cassis, violets, spring flowers, and cedar notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, has a balanced, elegant texture, and beautifully integrated tannins. As with the Grand Vin, it brings ample richness and depth while holding onto a beautiful sense of freshness. Drink this brilliant second wine over the coming two decades.

JS 94 James Suckling 2021 vintage

Soft and attractive character to this wine, showing a polished-tannin frame and a juicy center-palate. Medium body with medium, velvety tannins. Juicy. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot.

JD 93 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 vintage 3/29/2023

This Château has made truly legendary wines in 2020. Looking at the vintage, the harvest occurred all in September, and their second wine, the 2020 Carruades De Lafite, is based on 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was raised in 90% new French oak. The alcohol hit 13% and the pH is 3.84. It’s much more open and expressive than the Grand Vin and offers beautiful darker red and black fruits as well as leafy tobacco, cedar pencil, and spicy nuances. Medium-bodied, layered, and concentrated, it has the vintage’s more structured, firm feel on the palate, rock-solid mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It needs 4–5 years of bottle age but will evolve for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD 91 Jeb Dunnuck 2021 vintage 4/3/2024

The 2021 Carruades De Lafite is beautiful, with some classic Lafite elegance in its medium-bodied aromas and flavors of red fruits, leather, dried flowers, and spicy wood. It has ultra-fine tannins, a soft, supple mouthfeel, and outstanding length. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2021 vintage

The 2021 Carruades de Lafite is mostly composed of the younger replacement vines dotted throughout Lafite’s vineyards on the plateau, which are harvested separately. Offering up aromas of red berries, cassis, cedar box and orange rind, it’s medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, with good concentration and a long, penetrating finish. It’s a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, part of which was matured in wooden vats rather than barriques.
