Charlotte Dalton Hardy (a New Zealander, no relation to the South Australian Hardy family) makes this wine from two family-run vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, Deanery and Downer. Its ripe strawberry-red fruit gives a brisk take on shiraz, a clean, sleek wine with stamina.

Bright blueberries and cassis with some crushed flowers. This is a floral and fragrant style with some savory wildness at the edge. The palate has a crunchy, juicy and approachable feel with bright, ripe red-fruit punch. Drink now. Screw cap.

Have patience with this small-batch Shiraz—it changes constantly in the glass. While it’s not quite as charming as this natural-leaning producer’s two Semillons, it does offer personality in the form of ground cornmeal, plum, currant and licorice notes, which become more floral and spicy as the wine sits in the glass. On the mouth, the acidity soars and the tight-grained powdery tannins rule. But there’s bountiful fresh fruit and spice flavors as well. (Christina Pickard)
