E. Guigal Château de Nalys Grand Vin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019 750ml

The flagship wine of de Nalys sourced from the famed La Crau vineyard, this powerful, complex red highlights Grenache augmented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Vacarèse. Matured partially in oak, it offers black-plum flavors muted by shades of earth, sun-scorched garrigue and a lingering vein of salty minerality. The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Grand Vin offers more depth, with a darker core of fruit as well as complex notes of peppery garrigue, loamy earth, and incense. The balance here is spot on, it's medium to full-bodied, and has great tannins, all making for a brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape with tons to love. It shows the sunny style of the vintage as well but doesn't lose a beat with regards to elegance and finesse. Give bottles 3-4 years and it should have two decades of overall longevity.

A bright savory note leads off this red, followed quickly by sanguine and bay leaf accents, all melding nicely with the core of steeped blackberry, raspberry and plum fruit flavors as they move through the rich, licorice root-tinged finish. This lures you in with a well of slightly warmed cassis mixed with raspberry pâte de fruit and mulled bitter cherry. On the back end, waves of menthol, tobacco, cast iron and warm earth mix in with the fruit. Youthfully backward and on the brawny side, this will need some cellaring to resolve fully. Hints of vanilla, menthol and cedar gently mark the nose of the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Grand Vin, which saw about 20% new oak in its élevage. There's plenty of raspberry and black cherry to balance out the ledger in this balanced, age-worthy effort. It's full-bodied and labeled a full 1% higher in alcohol than its Saintes Pierres sibling, with a rich, ripe mouthfeel, ample concentration and a long, velvety finish that adds hints of salted licorice. Tasty stuff.

Deep ruby. Red and blue fruit, garrigue, pungent floral and exotic spice aromas show fine definition and mineral lift. Juicy black raspberry, boysenberry and candied lavender flavors deepen through the back half, with no loss of energy. Closes with emphatic, spicy thrust on the penetrating finish, which features even tannins and resonating floral and blue fruit notes. (Josh Raynolds)

The best offering from this property I can remember, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Grand Vin leads with knockout aromas of garrigue, raspberries and stone fruit. It’s full-bodied, loaded with explosive levels of fruit that buffer the silky tannins, and includes a vivid sense of tension that gives the finish drive and length.
