This offers a mix of dark cherry, currant and blackberry compote flavors, scored liberally with singed alder, dried sage and warm earth accents through the finish. Leading off the 2022s from bottle, the 2022 Gigondas has tons of chalky minerality as well as peppery, spicy garrigue-driven aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, balanced mouthfeel, and classic Provençal red and black fruits. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle today, and it’s going to see its 20th birthday in fine form. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Shimmering magenta. Powerful red and dark berry aromas are complemented by building spice, incense and floral notes. Sappy and densely packed, offering juicy black raspberry, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors that are firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Loaded with notes of black olives and black cherries, the full-bodied 2017 Gigondas is rich and velvety in the mouth. I’m not sure it’s quite as good as the 2018, but it’s certainly no slouch, with a long, silky finish that picks up a hint of cocoa.

Leading off the Gigondas, the base 2020 Gigondas has lots of black raspberry, ground pepper, and violets notes as well as a round, supple, silky style on the palate. It should be approachable on release, yet it has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as tannins, and I have no doubt it will evolve for 20 years if properly stored.

A blend of 70% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre, the 2017 Gigondas is a sexy, ripe effort in a forward, already approachable style. Notes of black raspberries, graphite, pepper, and garrigue all dominate the bouquet, and it’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate.
