Critical Acclaim
At the moment, the 2020 Gigondas Hominis Fides looks to be the standout of the three single vineyards, although all three are beautiful wines in the making. It certainly offers the most power and concentration, with lots of ground pepper, Provençal garrigue, violets, and loamy soils notes, as well as a darker cassis and berry-driven core of fruit. It builds beautifully on the palate, with ample structure, incredible balance, and a great, great finish.
Alluring, featuring a wave of crushed boysenberry, raspberry and black currant fruit that melds with tar, roasted tobacco, alder and dark earth notes as this moves along. A sleek sanguine accent and fine acidity skirt underneath, giving this subtle lift and cut. One for the cellar. Best from 2021 through 2035. 215 cases made, 37 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
Full vivid ruby. Highly expressive, mineral- and spice-driven aromas of ripe red berries, potpourri and incense show sharp definition, and suggestions of candied lavender, cola and vanilla build in the glass. Shows impressive depth as well as energy on the palate, offering powerful raspberry, cherry preserve and floral pastille flavors and an emerging suggestion of exotic spices. Finishes with a jolt of juicy acidity, alluring sweetness and harmonious tannins that lend shape to a wonderfully long, spice- and floral-drenched finish. (Josh Raynolds)
My favorite of the single vineyard cuvées in 2017 is the Gigondas Hominis Fides, which comes from a vineyard just across the street from Le Claux. It has a killer nose of exotic flowers, freshly crushed rocks, new saddle leather, flowers, spice, and violets. Possessing full-bodied richness, an incredibly sexy, seamless, yet powerful style, and an awesome finish, it’s unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage.
Sturdy and sleek at the same time, with concentrated waves of black currant and plum encased in a serious robe of solid iron. This is just beginning to unfurl, revealing notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and singed rosemary, all powered by lifted acidity for great tension through the long, well-built finish. Cellar this to reveal its full potential. Best from 2027 through 2042. 39 cases imported.
All Grenache from a single vineyard of more sandy soils just downhill from the château, the 2023 Gigondas Hominis Fides was not destemmed and was brought up in used oak. It reveals darker berry fruits, roasted garrigue, graphite, and loamy soils and has a concentrated, broad, layered mouthfeel as well as beautiful mid-palate depth. It has ripe tannins and is a gorgeous, layered, sexy Gigondas that will keep for 20 years or more. Drink 2026-2045.
A rich, velvety red, showing both power and grace, this is introduced with heady steeped cherry and incense. Reveals raspberry coulis and charred plum flavors that race alongside black licorice and iron. The supple palate is quickly hemmed in by fine-grained tannins, with singed herbs and white pepper notes dancing through the long finish. Best from 2024 through 2035. 39 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
More peppery and floral than it was looking last year from barrel, the 2017 Gigondas Hominis Fides is another gorgeous Gigondas from the talented Louis Barruol. Boasting vibrant cassis fruit and hints of dark chocolate, this full-bodied, velvety-textured wine is a real beauty, showing terrific harmony and elegance on the finish.
This vintage perfectly suits this pure Grenache Noir, rooted in sandy, calcareous soils. Evoking aromas of blueberries, dark wild berries, spices and garrigue, the 2023 Gigondas Hominis Fides is medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a telluric force that drives a powerful, intense mid-palate. Perfumed and long, it offers a broad drinking window.
