Critical Acclaim

VN 91 Vinous 2022 vintage May 2023

The 2022 La Gurgue comes from a vineyard that now has more Petit Verdot that replaces Merlot from a selection massale, so that this vintage includes 17%. Picked September 9-30, matured in a prudent 15% new oak, it has a very pure bouquet with black plum and flecks of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft and pliant entry, lightly spiced, harmonious with a saline finish. Fine length and probably destined to be one of the most approachable wines of the appellation. 90-92 points. (Neal Martin)

RP 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2016 vintage Oct 31, 2022

A delicious wine that can already be approached with pleasure, the 2016 La Gurgue bursts with aromas of blackberries and cherries mingled with hints of licorice and violets. Medium-bodied, ample and seamless, it's a charming, enveloping wine that exhibits beautiful purity of fruit, supple structuring tannins and a nicely defined finish. It exemplifies the elegant, sensual style typical of this Sousans property. (William Kelley)

VN 91 Vinous 2016 vintage Jan 2019

The 2016 La Gurgue has turned out beautifully. This gorgeous Margaux Cru Bourgeois packs a serious punch, with plenty of blue/purplish berry fruit, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, smoke and tobacco. Succulent and racy to the core, La Gurgue hits all the right notes. I would prefer to drink the 2016 over the next decade or so, while the wine retains its youthful juiciness. (Antonio Galloni)

RP 90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2022 vintage Apr 28, 2023

The 2022 La Gurgue delivers aromas of dark berries, cherries and cassis, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and fleshy palate. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and fully 17% Petit Verdot, this pure, fruit-driven Margaux will be released under the old La Gurgue label from yesteryear. 90-91 points. (William Kelley)
