About This Wine

Producer Notes

Speyside: Pleasing style- silky, smooth and elegant, Cardhu is an authentic and definitive Speyside malt. Its unique tactile decanter houses a golden honey and subtly complex liquid, ideal with sweet meaty tastes. Founded in 1824 and purchased by John Walker & Sons in 1891, Cardhu remains one of the signature malts in the Johnny Walker blends.

Critical Acclaim

JD 95 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 vintage 3/29/2023

A château on an upward trajectory, the 2020 Château Soutard is another brilliant wine from this estate, which has a terrific terroir on the upper plateau. Cassis, violets, black cherries, tobacco, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all emerge from this beauty. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the elegant, pure, precise style of this vintage beautifully and has building yet fine tannins, terrific balance, and a gorgeous finish. This utterly classic Saint-Emilion will benefit from 3–4 years of bottle age and have 25+ of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

VN 95 Vinous 2020 vintage Feb 2023

The 2020 Soutard is stellar. Rich, ample and super-expressive, the 2020 impresses with its elegant, stylish personality. Rose petal, mint, mocha and sweet spice complement a core of red/purplish fruit, with pretty floral top notes that extend the finish gracefully. Firm yet nicely balanced tannins wrap it all together. This is beautifully done. (Antonio Galloni)

RP 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2022 vintage

The 2022 Soutard has turned out beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet dark berries, licorice mint and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, cool and layered, it's velvety and enveloping, with bright acids, sweet tannins and a long, polished finish. This estate on the edge of Saint-Emilion's limestone plateau is enjoying a notable renaissance, and this is a wine to seek out.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage Apr 6, 2023

The 2020 Soutard marks another step up for this revitalized property, which is now profiting as recently replanted blocks on prime terroirs come into production. Offering up aromas of dark berries, plums, rose petals, bay leaf and orange zest, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, polished tannins and a long, chalky finish. What’s more, it likely only hints at what’s to come. (William Kelley)

JS 94 James Suckling 2022 vintage

Pronounced dark plum and berry character with bark and dark chocolate. It’s medium-bodied with an integrated tannin structure and a wet earth, violet and berry finish. Drink in three or four years. Try after 2028.

JD 94 Jeb Dunnuck 2022 vintage

A blend of 76% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Malbec, the 2022 Château Soutard reveals cassis, blackcurrants, violets, spice, and beautiful minerality. Fresh and focused, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, with fine tannins and stunning elegance. Count me in as a fan, and it should evolve well for 20+ years. This is a château to watch.

JS 93 James Suckling 2020 vintage Sunday, May 14, 2023

A full-bodied red with plum, berry, dark chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. Round yet chewy tannins. Lots of flavor. Needs time to open but already plush and beautiful. Drink after 2026. (James Suckling)

SP 89 Wine Spectator 2020 vintage December 5, 2022

This has boysenberry and mulberry fruit spilling forth, with a red licorice note that drapes over the friendly, polished finish. Light-handed on the toast and avoids the vintage's slightly grainy feel. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2030. 5,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
