Critical Acclaim
Extremely perfumed with strawberry and forest floor with some sandalwood, roses and candied watermelon. It’s medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are bold and solid. Very persistent finish. Chewy at the end. Classic Barolo character. Drink after 2029.
Entrancingly deep, red and blue-rose aromas here with an ethereal, dried-leaf and herb edge and pristine red cherries. The palate has very impressive, fine and tight tannins and a fresh, pure core of red-cherry and plum flavor. Impeccably focused finish. Try from 2023.
This is supple and complex, delivering cherry, strawberry, summer meadow, earth, leather and iron aromas and flavors. Firmly structured, this picks up a hint of licorice as it winds down on the lingering finish, with tannins that are solid yet civilized. Shows fine potential. Best from 2028 through 2046. 1,670 cases made, 540 cases imported.
The Elvio Cogno 2020 Barolo Cascina Nuova has a hint of smoke and barrel with lots of red fruits, currants and cherries. There is an earthy element that ties in nicely with the oak, and there is a tart or crunchy side to the fruit that concludes with grippy tannins. It ages in large oak casks for 24 months. This is an ample release of 20,000 bottles.
Aromas of rose, red berry and wild herbs are front and center on this fresh, refined red. On the bright palate, taut, polished tannins and good acidity accompany juicy raspberry, white pepper and star anise. Drink 2020–2025. (Kerin O’Keefe)
A supple texture and harmony are the hallmarks of this alluring red, setting you up for pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice, mint and tobacco. A solid backbone of tannins provides support. This should develop nicely over the medium term. Best from 2021 through 2033. 1,900 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
This wine offers a symphony of spiced, mixed fruits that play across the sensory spectrum, from the bright, high-toned notes to the deeper bass tones. Crushed flowers and savory herbs add subtle accents that keep you drawn to the glass. The palate's elegance is perceived immediately as fine tannins and vibrant acidity deftly move the red-hued fruits across the palate to join with the more savory and umami tinged notes of the finish. The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a dark and concentrated expression that offers succulence and richness with a full load of ripe summer plum and blackberry. There is softness here with black and purple fruit, natural rubber and savory spice. Pair this wine with a hearty beef en croute and roasted vegetables.
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a very pretty entry-level offering from Elvio Cogno. Bright red berry and lifted floral notes pair nicely with the wine’s gracious, mid-weight feel. Silky tannins match the wine’s finely sculpted, saline-infused personality. The Cascina Nuova is a terrific example of the bright, taut Barolos made here in 2015. I would prefer to drink this gracious, lithe Barolo over the next decade or so. (Antonio Galloni)
