Critical Acclaim

WE 97 Wine Enthusiast 2020 vintage

Impressively dark in the glass, this bottling pairs intense purple fruit and flower on this nose with more roasted, umami-laden aromas. The elegant palate is a master class in tannin management, proving firm in structure yet soft in mouthfeel. Flavors of blackberry jam, cocoa, walnut and cracked pepper ride a lingering acidity into the finish.

RP 97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2019 vintage

The 2019 Soul Of A Lion is a blend of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Cabernet Franc (14%), and Petit Verdot (9%), aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque ruby in color, it offers aromatic contrast between dark, savory cherry fruit, chargrill and graphite, and top notes of green pepper and rose petals. The palate explodes with detailed flavors and its tannins are already resolved and chocolaty, with seamless acidity and exotic spicy layers emerging on the extended finish. Wow!

VN 96 Vinous 2019 vintage Jul 2022

Inky magenta. Primary, mineral-accented cassis, cherry pit, licorice, roasted coffee and incense aromas reveal oak spice and pipe tobacco flourishes. Shows superb clarity and spicy thrust on the palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit, exotic spice, vanilla and candied rose flavors that deftly blend weight and energy. Youthfully gripping tannins frame a wonderfully long, smoky finish that leaves cherry liqueur and vanilla notes behind. 100% new French oak. (Josh Raynolds)

JD 96 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 vintage

The 2020 Soul Of A Lion is tighter and more backward than the 2019 (which was also tight and focused at this stage as well), offering lots of ripe black fruits, new leather, mineral, and iron nuances to go with a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured style on the palate. It's unquestionably a beautiful, outstanding wine.

JD 96 Jeb Dunnuck 2017 vintage

Both vintages of the Soul of a Lion are stunning. The 2017 Soul Of A Lion offers a forward, bona fide fruit bomb style yet has plenty of class. A sweet nose of cassis, Asian spice, cedar box, and chocolate gives way to a full-bodied, hedonistic 2017 that stays balanced and layered. This cuvée always delivers and the 2017 is just an incredible drink.

JS 95 James Suckling 2019 vintage Thursday, April 7, 2022

A full-bodied cabernet sauvignon with firmness and length. Very polished tannins. Chewy and solid. Very curated and thoughtful quality to the tannins. Sandalwood and blackberry on the finish, which remains elegant, despite the strength. Try after 2025 and onwards.

WE 95 Wine Enthusiast 2019 vintage 10/1/2022

Toasted espresso bean, charred walnut shell and seared meat aromas ride atop a dark cassis tone, all contributing to the portrait of a brooding wine. That classic toasty, woody element spreads through the palate, as dark cocoa dust sprinkled across rich berry sauce flavors get a light pop of mint on the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

RP 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

The 2020 Soul Of A Lion, made from free-run juice, is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot matured for 22 months in 100% new French oak. It has a deep ruby color and pure aromas of blackcurrants, tobacco, truffle and thyme with touches of leather and graphite. The full-bodied palate has a pleasantly rustic texture and savory character, finishing with tobacco accents. Drink it over the next 3-5 years.

JS 95 James Suckling 2017 vintage

This has a pretty nose of lavender, cherries, ripe plums, mint chocolate, sweet tobacco, cloves and vanilla. It’s full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins. Compact, plush core of ripe fruit with juicy baked-strawberry character. Long and delicious. 75% cabernet sauvignon and 25% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

JD 94 Jeb Dunnuck 2019 vintage

Always a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot that’s brought up in new barrels, the 2019 Soul Of A Lion sports a dense purple hue as well as a beautiful nose of pure crème de cassis, currants, chocolate, crushed stone, and tobacco. It’s rich and full-bodied, with a voluptuous texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish.
