Critical Acclaim
A showy, enticing red, with melted licorice draped over linzer torte, black pepper and rooibos tea. Suave, with black tea tannins holding a gentle but solid grip, while bolts of iron keep this grounded. Approachable now, this will only improve with time in bottle. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2038. 1,200 cases made, 300 cases imported.
A classic nose brings together black cherry and blueberry with iris, rose and white pepper, all wrapped into a concentrated whole. The palate is round and rich, with ripe, dense fruit easing into spice, white pepper and red licorice. Best revisited after 2028.
Perfumy and high-toned, with beautiful dried rose petal, anise, cherry and raspberry coulis flavors. Broad on the palate, with subtle chewiness adding textural intrigue and toasted alder echoing on the well-meshed finish. Ripe and generous for the vintage. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2032. 1,200 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)
A fresh, juicy style, with bouncy licorice and crunchy plum powered by a beam of graphite-laced acidity. Touches of lavender and herbs add dimension. Shows good inner brightness; this is a pure and unadulterated style, with a slight whiff of apple wood smoke on the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2039. 550 cases made, 350 cases imported.
A mellow, dense and fruit-driven Châteauneuf-du-Pape with dark cherries, ripe plums and sweet spices on the nose. It’s full-bodied with fine tannins. Fleshy but in control, with a vivid finish. Drink or hold.
The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Domaine Barville comes from a mix of terroirs and is based on 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre that spent a year in foudre, old barrels, concrete, and terra cotta. Bright strawberries, redcurrants, peppery herbs, and a kiss of leather all emerge on the nose, and this lively, medium-bodied, elegant, solidly Provençal 2021 is drinking nicely today and will still be drinking nicely in 7–8 years.
