Mingling notions of cassis, cherries and plums with hints of coniferous forest floor and dark chocolate, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with an enveloping, multidimensional core, fine energy and a mouthwateringly saline finish.

The 2019 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru sees 20% new oak. It has a very harmonious bouquet with pure cranberry and raspberry fruit, though maybe not the most complex example that I encountered from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, quite structured, a hint of spice and balsamic behind the raspberry and cranberry fruit with a light cola note on the finish. I am fascinated to see how this Fremiets will develop.

The 2020 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru, which sees 20% new oak, has a very slight ferrous notes that tinctures the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, more cohesive than the aromatics, nice build in the mouth with a lightly spiced and quite elegant finish. Give this 4–5 years in bottle. Closure: Diam 5.

The 2018 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru comes from 0.61 hectares of vine that yielded 14 barrels this year. It has a feisty, high-toned bouquet of red currant, kirsch and orange zest aromas, hints of blue fruit emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and good density, the 20% new oak nicely integrated and lending presence on the midpalate. It just requires a little more precision on the finish, though it should age nicely.
