The team at Domenico Clerico interprets this vintage with elegance and intensity. These two contrasting descriptors can be applied to the 2018 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba, which shows excellent balance overall. The bouquet reveals dark fruit, ferrous earth, licorice and grilled herb. But you also get lifted aromas of wild roses and violets over a generous, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel.

Tight and focused on the nose with clean red berries and oak. Expands a little on the medium-to full-bodied palate, but still rather closed, with an elegant framework of very fine, lightly firm tannin and a dense core of fruit. The balance of fruit and tannin already gives a long finish. Needs to unravel a bit, but the essential ingredients are very fine indeed. Try from 2024.
