Critical Acclaim
Made with 6% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a rich, lively, expressive nose of black raspberry, oak and red florals that sway with sweet herbs and elegant baking spices. Full-bodied, fresh and still tannic, the wine will take a couple more years to come around but will be a juggernaut once it picks up momentum. After spending almost two years in 87% new French oak barrels, it will need some time, so be patient.
Like cracking open an ashen stone to find dark exotic spices, a dusting of cocoa, dried mint and black cherries, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon sets off all of the aromatic pleasure sensors. This is velvety, with dense textural waves of black raspberry and blackberry offset by notes of dark, dark chocolate and sour citrus. This tapers off with incredible length, precision and a mentholated freshness that adds lift through the structured finale. The 2019 is a vintage of Doubleback to lose in the cellar. Bravo. (Eric Guido)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon blends the power and intensity of the vintage with DoubleBack’s style of undeniable elegance. It wafts up with an enticingly classic bouquet of crushed violets and plums complemented by hints of graphite, stone dust and lavender. It’s silky smooth, seamless and supple, with depths of ripe red and black fruits that swirl across a radiant stream of cooling acidity. The 2021 finishes with fantastic length. Structured through the perfumed finale, it boasts sweet tannins and a tinge of licorice that lingers on and on. This is beautifully executed and built for the cellar. (Eric Guido)
Marking the first vintage where they used a full-time vineyard crew, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a generous, juicy frame on the nose with aromas of blackberry, resinous purple flowers and elegant tones. Full-bodied, the mouthfeel is beautifully balanced with impressive weight without being bogged down by a hedonistic alcohol expression. It glides to a gracious and harmonious finish that commands attention. Bravo, this is fantastic juice!
Notes of currants and blueberries with violets, toasted walnuts and crushed stones. Medium- to full-bodied, juicy and crunchy with ripe tannins and a lingering, blue-fruited finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)
