Critical Acclaim

JD 97 Jeb Dunnuck 2022 vintage

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis is also stunning, with an upfront, perfumed style in its wild strawberry and framboise-driven fruit as well as savory garrigue, spice, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with fine tannins, it has a remarkable sense of elegance and finesse as well as ample richness and length.

JD 97 Jeb Dunnuck 2019 vintage

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis comes from more sandy soils and is all Grenache raised in demi-muids. Wild strawberries, cherries, flowery incense, lavender, and loamy earth all make an appearance, and it’s full-bodied, has a deep layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another wine that needs a few years of bottle age, but it will deliver the goods over the following 15+. This is Grenache at its most elegant and seamless.

VN 96 Vinous 2019 vintage Oct 2021

Deep, shimmering ruby. Expansive, mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berry preserve, incense, cola and garrigue qualities on the finely detailed nose. Palate-staining cherry pie, raspberry, boysenberry, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors show uncanny energy for their depth. The spice and floral notes dominate a seriously long, sappy finish framed by velvety, well-knit tannins. (Josh Raynolds)

VN 96 Vinous 2022 vintage

A single-varietal Grenache fermented entirely with whole clusters, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis is spectacular. Pungent licorice, black cherry, elderflower, crushed violets, black plum and dried herbs are all pushed forward. On the palate, the polished 2022 offers vivid acidity that gives it a real sense of energy. The persistent and broad finish confirms a wine of outstanding quality that can easily keep up with the preceding vintages. Tasted twice with consistent
notes.

RP 96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2022 vintage

One of the more elegant and racy wines at this address this year, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis, crafted exclusively from Grenache Noir planted on safres, calcareous soils and a mix of other soils, displays a delicate, perfumed bouquet of rose, flowers, dark cherries, pepper and herbs. Medium to full-bodied, layered and racy, it's deep and concentrated with velvety tannins with a delicate core of fruit and a long, ethereal finish. Matured in a mix of foudres, concrete tanks and terracotta jars, this is an outstanding wine in the making.

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2020 vintage November 1, 2022

This is a lovely display of fruit, with cassis, bitter cherry and mulberry notes that stretch out effortlessly, carried by a perfectly embedded structure and backed by lilting anise and red and black tea notes along the way. Reveals a seductive mouthfeel too, but don’t let that fool you—this will age well. Drink now through 2036. 869 cases made, 190 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

SP 94 Wine Spectator 2019 vintage December 31, 2021

So silky this version seems expressive at first, but the core of cassis, cherry purée and raspberry fruit is tightly coiled, with both chalk and iron notes having their say, stretching out in unison through the finish. Black tea and garrigue hints peek in as well, which is a sign of what’s to come after cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2036. 3,720 cases made, 310 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

JD 94 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 vintage 11/3/2021

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis is the usual 100% Grenache that was brought up all in demi-muids. More dried strawberries, blackberries, loamy earth, spice, and hints of saddle leather emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, has ripe tannins, and is just a heavenly Grenache in the making. I don’t see it hitting the same heights as the 2007, but it’s certainly up with the top players of the vintage.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage May 5, 2022

Drawn from three plots of old-vine Grenache (70- to 80-year-old vines), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis looks to be another fantastic example of this cuvée, bursting with cherries and raspberries and nuanced by delicate sprigs of garrigue and hints of roses and black tea. Medium to full-bodied and silken in texture on the palate, it finishes with tremendous length and subtly building tannins. It’s one 2020 that could take a few years to come around.
