Critical Acclaim
The 2021 Aglianico Rubrato wafts up with an earthy blend of dried herbs, underbrush and black currants. It's juicy in character with mineral-tinged black fruits that add traction, all supported by a core of brisk acidity. This tapers off pleasantly bitter, leaving citrus and tart blackberry hints to fade slowly.
Stewed damson, licorice root and a faint waft of dried tobacco leaf, the calling card of aglianico. Mid-weighted and soft for the variety, but not without personality and a gentle flex of savory muscle. Good drinking. Drink now.
Here’s an entry-level red from Feudi di San Gregorio. The 2020 Irpinia Aglianico Rubrato (with 300,000 bottles released) would pair with your favorite pizza combination, with maybe sausage and broccoletti. It opens to a dark ruby color and shows aromas of pressed cherry, blackberry, blue flower and campfire ash.
Bright acidity animates flavors of blackberry paste and chopped black cherry, with accents of smoke, grilled herbs and toast. A balanced, medium-bodied red, with light tannins. Drink now. 3,000 cases imported.
There’s a gamy, sanguine edge to this chewy, medium-bodied red, with savory accents of grilled meat, briary herbs and smoke layered with crushed mulberry and boysenberry fruit, rose hip and singed orange peel flavors. Drink now. 3,000 cases imported.
