Critical Acclaim

WE 95 Wine Enthusiast 2018 vintage 9/1/2022

Heady aromas of camphor, rose petal and red forest berry come to the forefront along with whiffs of pipe tobacco and new leather. Full-bodied but refined and well-balanced, the savory palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and mint alongside velvety tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026–2033. (Kerin O’Keefe)

VN 95 Vinous 2018 vintage Jan 2023

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is broad, ample and so expressive, all while showing the finesse and classicism that are such a signature of this wine. All elements are so well balanced in a Barolo that speaks to harmony above all else. Sweet red cherry, cedar, orange peel, tobacco and cinnamon give the 2018 tons of aromatic presence. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It’s a gorgeous wine in every way. (Antonio Galloni)

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2020 vintage

A touch of spices mellows the profile of this red, lending accents to the core of cherry, strawberry, rose and mineral aromas and flavors. Beautifully balanced, with finesse and an expansive finish. Stylish and elegant. Best from 2028 through 2045. 6,500 cases made, 2,200 cases imported.

RP 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2018 vintage

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

Only a handful of producers have access to this very exciting MGA in Verduno. The Fratelli Alessandria 2020 Barolo Monvigliero shows added complexity with a note of cola or balsam herb that lifts above wild berry and cassis. There are floral notes in this warm vintage, but they lean into pressed violet and dry rose instead of fresh flowers. This expression has extra concentration and even a hint of stemmy bitter fruit that should iron out with time.

JS 93 James Suckling 2020 vintage

This has a fragrant, inviting nose with chocolate cherry, dried orange peel, hints of sandalwood and crushed stones. Medium-bodied and so tense and vibrant on the palate with vivid acidity. Tight and dusty, but already delicious. Better after 2027.
