Critical Acclaim
Ripe and with a bit of flash thanks to its glossy toast, this red delivers a violet-accented core of cassis and plum reduction, with black licorice, sweet tobacco and singed alder notes. Solid and steady through the lengthy, polished finish, with a hint of flinty minerality lurking in the background. Drink now through 2040. 3,100 cases made. (James Molesworth)
A selection of the best lots from the winery's Oakville estate, aged in 100% new oak, Groth's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a great wine at a realistic—for Napa Valley—price. Textbook notes of cedar and vanilla gently cosset black cherries and hints of dried herbs. It's full-bodied, creamy and lush in texture, showing more concentration, tannin and length than the winery's regular Oakville Cabernet. (Joe Czerwinski)
A fresh, overt style, with a lovely beam of red currant, bing cherry and raspberry paste stitched together with flickers of anise, sassafras and bramble. Delivers a pretty violet echo on the fruity finish. Best from 2023 through 2037. 3,100 cases made. (James Molesworth)
The deeper purple-hued 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a terrific Oakville effort loaded with pure cassis fruit as well as notes of spicy oak, scorched earth, and tobacco. Classic Napa Cabernet in every way, it’s medium to full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, a terrific spine of acidity, and the balance and purity to evolve for 20–25 years if well stored.
Notes of blackberries and cassis with hints of pine needles, cedar and chocolate. Full-bodied with firm tannins and a deep, juicy fruit core. Long and chewy finish with hints of stones. Rather polished tannins at the end. Try in 2023, to allow it to open. (James Suckling)
Groth’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve substantially raises the stakes, showing much more richness and concentration than the regular Cabernet Sauvignon. Black cherries and cassis appear on the nose, framed by cedar and vanilla, while the medium to full-bodied palate is velvety and expansive, flowing easily into a long, harmonious finish dusted with soft tannins.
