About This Wine

Tasting Notes

Shimmering pale straw-gold in color. High-toned and complex on the nose, offering vibrant scents of Meyer lemon oil, green apple, white peach, honeysuckle, and crushed flint, supported by subtle notes of toasted brioche and hazelnut. Full-bodied, satiny, and precise on the palate, presenting concentrated flavors of citrus curd, pear, and chalky minerality. Layered with seamless texture and driven by an electric line of natural cooling acidity that carries through a long, elegant, and saline finish.

Producer Notes

Hyde de Villaine (HdV) represents a historic partnership formed in 2000 between two renowned winemaking families: the Hyde family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine family of Burgundy (Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti). Sourced from historic heritage clones on the cool, windy Hyde Vineyard in Los Carneros, the viticulture emphasizes organic practices and deep root health. Vinified with Burgundian precision—utilizing native yeast fermentation, restrained new French oak, and minimal intervention—HdV crafts Chardonnays celebrated for their taut mineral structure, vibrant acidity, and long aging potential.

Critical Acclaim

JS 99 James Suckling 2023 vintage December 2025

This wine is truly excellent, showing a mineral-edged nose with pure energy and tension. Aromas of struck match, citrus blossoms, crushed stones and salted nuts. The palate is taut, with no hard edges and driving acidity that keeps you salivating for minutes. Closing in on perfection. Drink or hold.

JS 97 James Suckling 2022 vintage

A superb and rich chardonnay with driven phenolics that frame the wine, giving it form and intensity. It’s full-bodied but not heavy. Dried apples, nuts, peach pie and hints of salted butter and honey. It’s flavorful and intense. Real Napa chardonnay. 70% Wente clone and the rest Calera. So drinkable now, but will age very well.

VN 96 Vinous 2023 vintage November 2025

The 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is airy, gracious and understated. It's a wine of restraint, even for this house. Seamless and elegant in the glass, the Hyde is exquisitely finessed. Today, the 2023 is rather quiet, but time in bottle should help this really blossom. Aeration brings out the wine's mid-palate oiliness and texture. The Hyde was aged 70% in barrel, 20% in foudre and 10% in concrete. The precision here is unreal.

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2022 vintage July 31, 2025

A stunning version, with notes of candied orange peel, Bartlett pear, lemon blossoms and lemon curd that are fresh, pure and lively. Then a chorus of complexity comes in, including buttered, toasted brioche, dried lemon thyme and salted, roasted hazelnut, with a creamy, elegant texture that helps the harmony linger on the long finish. Drink now through 2036. 1,335 cases made.

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2023 vintage July 2006

An impressive white, with toasted fennel seed, honeysuckle, Opal apple and white peach flavors that are generous and plump, plus a drizzle of clover honey, salted toffee, lemon meringue and salted, toasted brioche. The fruit flavors take over on the finish, expanding in different directions with plenty of oomph and intensity. Drink now through 2036. 2,700 cases made.

VN 93 Vinous 2022 vintage

The 2022 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is powerful and resonant in the glass. Lemon confit, marzipan, hazelnut, slate and white flowers all soar out of the glass. Silky and persistent, with fine depth, the 2022 has plenty to offer. I find the reduction here quite prominent, but there does appear to be enough fruit and overall texture to pull it all together. Clones here are 70% Wente Clone and 30% Calera.<br/><br/>
