About This Wine
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-garnet in color with soft violet reflections. Fragrant and complex on the nose, opening with scents of wild raspberry, tart red cherry, crushed bluebells, and subtle notes of peppermint and medicinal herbs over a chalky limestone mineral base. Medium-bodied, fresh, and energetic on the palate, presenting juicy flavors of red currant, sour cherry, and wild berries. Framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins and vibrant natural acidity that transition into a clean, fresh, and mouthwatering finish.
Producer Notes
Founded by native vigneron José Gil and his wife Vicky Fernández, José Gil Vigneron represents the vanguard of a new, terroir-first generation in Rioja. Sourced from high-altitude plots across less than one hectare in Labastida within Rioja Alavesa, this 'Vino de Pueblo' captures the unique high-elevation limestone soils and cool mountain breeze of the Sierra Cantabria. Co-fermented with indigenous yeasts and a small percentage of local white grapes, the wine is aged gently in concrete and large neutral oak to highlight pure, expressive fruit and electric terroir expression without heavy oak intervention.

The fourth vintage of their red village wine from Labastida is the 2024 Viñedos en Labastida, produced with grapes from different plots of very old vines ranging from 60 to 100 years of age on different soils, mostly sandy and fine, all very rich in limestone, where they have field blends of Tempranillo with Garnacha and Viura. The key is that they added a centenary plot that is almost 50% Garnacha, and it's now the backbone of the wine; so, the final blend contains almost 35% Garnacha. Labastida ripens earlier, so they harvest it first, as they have to be careful of the ripeness. The nose is a little more austere and serious than the one from San Vicente, but it has nuance and complexity. It has contained ripeness and 13.5% alcohol, a medium- to full-bodied palate and fine tannins. They're different and both are superb.
Enebro, with crunchy red fruit, red cherries, herbal notes, violets and a perfumed profile. Delicate, ethereal fruit with precise tannins, very nuanced and detailed yet not lacking substance. Medium- to full-bodied with focused, slightly chalky tannins. The youngest vines are around 60 years old, with about 25% whole cluster. A blend of 85% tempranillo, 10% garnacha and 5% white varieties. Drink or hold.
