About This Wine
Tasting Notes
Bright, translucent ruby-garnet in color. Highly perfumed and lifted on the nose, displaying expressive aromas of wild strawberries, sour red cherries, crushed violets, and bluebells, intertwined with wild thyme, orange blossom, and a distinct line of crushed stone minerality. Medium-bodied, vibrant, and precise on the palate, bursting with juicy red currant and black raspberry flavors. Supported by fine-grained, chalky tannins and an electric beam of natural mountain acidity that leads to a long, mineral, and mouthwatering finish.
Producer Notes
Founded by native vigneron José Gil and his wife Vicky Fernández, José Gil Vigneron represents the vanguard of a new, terroir-first generation in Rioja Alta. Farming organically across high-elevation parcels (500–600 meters) at the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, they craft small-batch, site-specific 'Vino de Pueblo' (village) wines. Inspired by Burgundian winemaking philosophy, the grapes are co-fermented with indigenous yeasts and partial whole-clusters in concrete tanks, then aged in neutral vessel formats to allow the pure, electric limestone minerality and vibrant fruit profile of their home village to shine through without heavy oak extraction.

Critical Acclaim
The village red 2024 Viñedos en San Vicente de la Sonsierra was produced with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura grapes from younger and older vines in the village, from different altitudes and expositions. They added some old vineyards in 2024, and that gives the wine even more Garnacha character. It fermented with 25% full clusters in concrete and stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, and 60% of the wine matured in 500-liter oak barrels and 40% was in raw concrete vats for 11 months. It's very aromatic, fruit-driven, floral and expressive, very open, extroverted and clean. It has good ripeness and a moderate 13.3% alcohol and great balance.
The 2024José Gil, from old vines in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, blends approximately 75% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% white varieties co-planted in the vineyard. Layered and vibrant, it shows intense red fruit—cherry and sour cherry—alongside violet tones and a faint herbal trace, all well integrated. Harvested relatively early for a warm year, it presents slightly tense, reactive tannins that are juicy rather than drying and enhance the wine's pristine fruit expression. As a thoughtful response to a warm vintage, it stands as a stylistic thesis: in increasingly hot years, less opulent wines like this gain precision and depth, even if they sacrifice some mid-palate weight.
