Critical Acclaim

JD 97 Jeb Dunnuck 2019 vintage 7/9/2022

While just bottled a week before this tasting, the 2019 Syrah Powerline Vineyard certainly wasn’t showing any worse for it, offering a stunning bouquet of ripe red and black fruits as well as white pepper, sandalwood, tobacco, and new leather. Pure, medium to full-bodied, and vibrant, with supple, polished tannins, this brilliant Syrah is going to keep for 10–12 years, if not longer. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD 95 Jeb Dunnuck 2018 vintage 5/6/2021

Another Syrah from this site in Walla Walla, the dense purple/ruby 2018 Syrah Powerline Vineyard offers up a classic nose of spiced red and black fruits, cured meats, peppery herbs, lavender, and truffle. This carries to a rich, medium to full-bodied Syrah with terrific tannins as well as balance. It already offers considerable pleasure yet is going to have a solid 10–15 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

VN 95 Vinous 2018 vintage Mar 2022

Made entirely from Phelps clone Syrah, the 2018 Syrah Powerline was aged for 24 months in 35% new French oak prior to bottling. It has a very Côte-Rôtie bull’s-blood character alongside iodine and volcanic ash on the nose. The palate is plush with a seamless texture and wonderful length. A very pretty core of dark fruits mingles with shades of creosote, Earl Grey tea and suggestions of orange zest. The flavor and aromatic range here are outstanding, and this brilliant wine isn’t going anywhere for another 10 years. (Owen Bargreen)

SP 93 Wine Spectator 2018 vintage June 30, 2022

A wine of presence and depth that opens to dark berry, licorice and smoky pepper flavors, which build detail and tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 1,055 cases made. (Tim Fish)
