Kapcsándy Family Winery Kapcsándy Family Winery Estate Cuvée - Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 750ml

Including 5% Merlot and checking in at 14.2% natural alcohol, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee sports a semi-opaque ruby hue to go with a classic, almost old-school Cabernet nose of red and black currants, chocolate, sandalwood, freshly sharpened pencils, and dried herbs. A more elegant, complex, nuanced Cabernet, it’s medium to full-bodied and has ripe yet building tannins, good acidity, and a great finish. All about purity, precision, and elegance, while not sacrificing intensity or richness, this gorgeous, Château Margaux-like Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be hidden for 4–5 years, if not a decade, and will drink brilliantly over the following 20–30 years. The 2019 Estate Cuvée offers tremendous density, power and textural intensity, almost shockingly so for these wines, especially compared to the 2018, which is its diametric opposite stylistically. The wine’s density and sheer tannic heft are imposing. There is just a bit of reduction that needs time to dissipate. Ripe red-fleshed fruit, sage, lavender, plum and mint flesh out in a Cabernet Sauvignon that marries power, density and energy. This is impressive, to say the least. (Antonio Galloni)

Moving to the reds and a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 55% new French oak, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is deeply colored and has a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and spring flowers that has both richness and complexity. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it stays firmly in the elegant style of the vintage with plenty silky tannins, good acidity, and a great finish.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée, which includes a splash of Merlot (3%), shines for its beautiful elegance and purity, with lots of blue fruits, violets, orange blossom, and lead pencil aromas and flavors. Tasting like a mini Grand Vin, it’s full-bodied, with ripe, present tannins, and certainly has the classic, noble style that’s the hallmark of this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2017 Estate Cuvée has turned out beautifully. Rich, smoky and inviting, the 2017 will, uncharacteristically, drink well pretty much upon release. In 2017, the Estate is a bit broader and richer than it usually is, but all of the elements are in the right place. To be sure, the natural richness of 2017 is evident, but at the same time Lou and Louis Kapcsándy have done a terrific job in avoiding the hard tannins that are found in so many wines. Tobacco, cedar, leather, smoke, licorice and incense add to a feeling of gravitas and pure power. This is an impressive showing. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2018 Estate Cuvée is silky and supremely elegant right from the very first taste. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. Soaring Cabernet aromatics meld into a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit, with hints of spice, sweet tobacco and cedar. Simply put, the Estate Cuvée is a total knock-out. (Antonio Galloni)

A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée has a deep purple-black color. It jumps out of the glass with exuberant scents of blueberry pie, plum preserves and blackberry compote plus hints of dark chocolate, violets and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, supported by soft, velvety tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Aged in 75% new French oak, the alcohol is a relatively modest 14.2%. 375 cases were made.

Composed of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is deep garnet-purple colored. It was aged in 55% new French oak, 18% new Hungarian oak and 27% second fill French oak. It bursts from the glass with rambunctious black cherry compote, blueberry pie and crushed blackcurrant scents, plus hints of menthol, baker’s chocolate and cedar chest. Medium-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid structure of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long with a red-fruited skip in its step. 425 cases were made. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 55% new French oak, 18% new Hungarian oak and 27% second fill French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it strolls nonchalantly out of the glass with forward notes of baked black cherries, mulberries and warm cassis plus wafts of lilacs, cinnamon stick, cedar chest and clove oil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate rolls easily over the tongue with gregarious black and blue fruits plus a fragrant, floral edge and plush tannins, finishing with plenty of freshness and spicy kick. 250 cases were made.
