Critical Acclaim

JS 95 James Suckling 2019 vintage

This has classic Rioja aromas of cherries, dried flowers, earth, spices and orange peel. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Juicy, with opulent fruit. Drink or hold.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2017 vintage Feb 29, 2024

2017 was not an easy harvest, but it produced some beautiful and classical wines, like the 2017 Viña Ardanza Reserva, which shows a little more advancement and polish and is ready to drink. It was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from their vineyard La Pedriza in Tudelilla. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in American oak barrels, 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 for the Garnacha (that was harvested 15 days later), with six rackings. It’s ripe and aromatic, tertiary, with 14.5% alcohol and mellow acidity, a medium-bodied palate and sleek tannins. It has a pungent note of clove and pepper, some licorice and ink and the cherries in liqueur from the Garnacha. An updated classical Ardanza. 600,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2019 vintage

No 2018 was produced, so after the 2017 I tasted last year, we jumped to the 2019 Viña Ardanza Reserva, produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. It fermented destemmed in stainless steel and aged in American oak barrels, 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 months for Garnacha, and was blended before bottling. 2019 is a very good year for them, a small crop of powerful and concentrated wines when they produced all their brands, an exception. This is spicy, structured, balanced and powerful in this warm year, reaching the customary 14.5% alcohol and keeping a pH of 3.54 and 5.5 grams of acidity. It's still very young and undeveloped, with the classical profile, generous in American oak aromas and flavors that should slowly integrate in the wine with years in bottle. For them, 2019 means a change in Ardanza, less spicy (but still quite spicy, with clove, vanilla and tobacco leaves) and with more fresh fruit from the Garnacha. But the year is a modern version of 2015. 500,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2023. No 2023 or 2024 will be produced either.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

The subtle, balsamic, structured and elegant 2020 Viña Ardanza Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo from Rioja Alta and around 20% Garnacha from Rioja Baja. It fermented destemmed in stainless steel and aged in American oak barrels, 20% of them new, for a period of 36 months in the case of the Tempranillo and 30 months for the Garnacha, then the two wines are blended before bottling. It's a textbook example of the label, with the perfume and elegance of the Garnacha and the clout from Tempranillo. It has clean aromas and is still quite fresh, only starting its tertiary phase. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol and keeps a pH of 3.57 and 5.7 grams of acidity. It's balanced, seamless and well-built, and its tannins are mostly resolved. It should live long in bottle. 500,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2024.

VN 93 Vinous 2019 vintage May 2025

The 2019 Reserva Viña Ardanza is a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha from Rioja Alta. Its bouquet opens with cherry liqueur, black fruit and balsamic herbs alongside a touch of pepper. Dry, silky and just fresh enough, it offers good body with agility, polished tannins and a velvety feel. The long, sapid finish continues with gentle grip. This is balanced and expressive—a classic Rioja with a modern, fruit-driven flourish.

SP 92 Wine Spectator 2017 vintage August 31, 2024

Baked cherry, raspberry ganache and warm fig flavors are ripe and expressive, with a pleasing counterpoint and added detail from rich notes of loamy earth and leather, plus accents of bay leaf, vanilla and red licorice. There’s a supple generosity on the palate, trimmed nicely by fine-grained tannins and a tang of orange peel acidity. Tempranillo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2032. 35,000 cases made, 9,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

VN 92 Vinous 2020 vintage

The 2020 Vina Ardanza (80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha) spent its first year in new oak and its second in seasoned barrels. More defined and brighter than the 2019, the nose shows red berries and a balsamic lift, framed by more restrained oak. On the palate, it is fine grained and gently firm, still youthful, with slightly reactive tannins. It sits between tghe house's classical style and a more primary, fruit-forward expression. With time, it will gain integration and precision.

SP 91 Wine Spectator 2019 vintage December 2025

Hints of cocoa powder and anise wind through the warmed cherry, plum and fig fruit flavors on display in this plushly textured red, backed by lively acidity and lightly chewy tannins. Hints of iron and herbs linger on the finish. Tempranillo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2036. 41,666 cases made.
