Critical Acclaim

WE 97 Wine Enthusiast 2021 vintage

This attractive and sophisticated wine relies on a hearty portion of Merlot combined with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and aromatics of Cabernet Franc. Tobacco, toasted oak and roast coffee aromatics are greeted by flavors of black plum, sweet tobacco and dark chocolate, with a refreshing lift of fennel. Creamy, palate-coating tannins carry into a long finish for brooding and intriguing effect.

VN 94 Vinous 2014 vintage Dec 2016

The 2014 Firebelle, Larkmead's Merlot-based wine, is terrific. Succulent black cherry, lavender, mint and dark spices infuse this pliant, creamy wine. Expressive savory and mineral-infused notes punctuate the finish. The tannins need time to soften, but there is plenty to like and look forward to. (Antonio Galloni)

JS 94 James Suckling 2021 vintage

Intense black and blue fruit character with ground spices, blue flowers, crushed stone and hints of cedar. Full-bodied, deep and succulent, showing harmony and poise. Very fine, compact tannins and vivid acidity leading to a vivid, refined aftertaste. Better after 2027.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2014 vintage

A blend of 72% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Firebelle finished at 14.9% alcohol. It is a beautifully rich, chocolaty wine with notes of savory spices, black cherries and mulberries, some fudge and coffee bean. It has medium to full body, outstanding purity, concentration and length. It was aged in 66% new French oak for 19 months prior to bottling. Drink it over the next 15–20 years.

SP 88 Wine Spectator 2014 vintage September 28, 2017

Juicy, with graphite and herbal shadings to the dried red fruit and black olive flavors. Muscular tannins and forest floor notes show on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,413 cases made. (Kim Marcus)
