Critical Acclaim
The 2019 Barolo Baudana is absolutely captivating. Effusive and bright in the glass, with tons of freshness and remarkable fruit purity, the Baudana offers up generous dark red fruit, spice, leather, kirsch, hard candy, cedar, tobacco and underbrush. There’s terrific depth here and exceptional balance, too. Rose petal, white pepper and chalk lift the high-toned, intensely saline finish. (Antonio Galloni)
The 2021 Barolo Baudana is ruby red in color and offers a wonderful clarity and focus on the nose, with bright notes of cranberry, orange peel, bright spice, and dried rocky earth. The palate has a more linear tension, with a refreshing and lifted feel, compact tannins, and a long, even finish. Following harvest, it saw 42 days of submerged cap fermentation and 23 months of cask aging prior to resting in bottle. Drink 2027-2047.
This red hits all the marks, from its macerated cherry and strawberry fruit to its savory, eucalyptus and herbal notes to its fluid feel and dense structure. Balanced, with plenty of support and fine potential to develop over time. Best from 2029 through 2048. 600 cases made, 300 cases imported.
New leather, forest floor and woodland berry aromas come to the forefront along with a whiff of blue flower. It’s opens smooth and savory but its true structure shows up midpalate, delivering juicy Morello cherry, licorice and hazelnut framed against a backbone of fresh acidity and tightly-wound, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2026–2036. (Kerin O’Keefe)
The organic Luigi Baudana 2021 Barolo Baudana appears glossy and polished with bright intensity delivered through red and purple fruits, spice and floral aromas. The wine is quite lightweight on the palate, even lean, but it makes up for a lack of textural weight with a very long and silky finish. Minutes later, you feel dried rose and pulverized stone. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak cask.
The 2017 Barolo Baudana is such a gorgeous wine. It, too conveys the power of Serralunga, but with a bit less heft than is typically the case. Sweet dark cherry, iron, cedar, rose petal, mint and white pepper give the 2017 its effusive, inviting personality. This is such a tremendous showing.
Rich, exuding cherry, raspberry, plum and floral notes, with iron, tobacco and tar accents lending complexity. Shows terrific balance and depth, with a tightly wound structure that bodes well for future development. Best from 2025 through 2043. 289 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
Cherry, raspberry liqueur, mint and mineral flavors highlight this taut, dense red, which is balanced, with eucalyptus and juniper notes chiming in on the protracted finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 570 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
The Luigi Baudana 2018 Barolo Baudana is a full and generous wine, somewhat surprisingly so considering the understated personality of this vintage. That volume makes this bottle stand out in a crowd of 2018 releases. Dark cherry, plum, spice, rust and crushed flowers make for a soft and readily accessible wine. This Barolo is oak fermented and aged in large Slavonian oak casks.
