When Pablo Picasso was asked what three things astonished him the most, his answer was: the blues, cubism and Polish vodka. The brand he was referring to was Luksusowa Potato vodka. A few sips into your first sampling of this crisp and refined vodka and you'll understand why Picasso was astonished. Luksusowa (pronounced Look-soo-so-vah) is made entirely from potatoes grown in the Baltic region of northern Poland. Distilling potatoes is an expensive proposition. Ten bushels of potatoes are required to produced the same amount of vodka as derived from one bushel of grain. The potato vodka is triple distilled in column stills and rendered to 80 proof with artesian well water, then filtered to render it essentially pure. Luksusowa is a world class bargain. It is crystal clear with an oily textured body and a compact bouquet of herbs and caramel. Its palate is initial a touch sweet, then slowly tapers off into a dry, long finish.
