Critical Acclaim
Honey and caramel nose; spicy with notes of maple cream and smoke with dried fruits, hickory and lush texture; mellow, sensual and seamless with a long, rich finish.
Finished in the barrel with specially seared oak staves, this Bourbon is a new classic. In the glass, it sports a bright maple color, and lively, spicy aromas and flavors of oaky vanilla and tropical fruit touched with clove, ginger and allspice.
This is original “red wax” Maker’s Mark that received additional aging in barrels containing internal “seared” French oak staves. The original Maker’s Mark, being a wheated bourbon (instead of rye, which is typically used), is rather mellow and easy-to-drink. The French oak staves in “46” add firm, complex dry spices (led by warming cinnamon, followed by nutmeg and clove), herb (a suggestion of Green Chartreuse, perhaps?), and some polished leather “grip”, which dovetails well with Maker’s trademark layered sweetness (caramel, vanilla, a hint of honey). I’m also picking up some dried fruit in the background. The seared oak stave influence is somewhat aggressive, but never to the point of being excessive.
Very pretty bronze color; impeccable clarity. Smells enticingly in the opening round of sniffing of buttered popcorn, new leather and candle wax; following another seven minutes of air contact, the aroma opens up intriguing areas that include dried flowers (honeysuckle), sawdust, oak plank and cereal wafers (like Triscuit, especially). Entry displays the expected Maker’s Mark integration and sophistication in the forms of bone dry cereal flavors, with a judicious touch of baking spice (nutmeg); midpalate is round, supple, succulent, toffee-like and gently, but not overly, corny sweet. Finishes gracefully yet with a velvet-coated punch that’s lacking in regular Maker’s. I welcome the gentlemanly punch.
