Mauro Veglio Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2019 750ml

In the dark blue label, the Mauro Veglio 2019 Barolo Castelletto shines from within the glass with dark ruby and garnet highlights. The Castelletto (with fruit from Monforte d'Alba) has a dark center of gravity with black cherry, plum and iron ore. This wine offers good power, structure and an especially firm texture. At its core, it is chiseled and hard. It definitely needs more cellar age, but I suspect this bottle will be worth the wait.

The 2017 Barolo Castelletto is fabulous. It is also the wine in this range that feels the least marked by heat. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and lavender all grace this beautifully translucent, expressive Barolo. There is some tannin that needs to soften—this is Monforte after all—but all the elements are impeccably balanced. (Antonio Galloni)

Dried flowers, potpourri and aromas of crushed stone open the bouquet of the 2017 Barolo Castelletto. This is a nicely balanced expression of Nebbiolo that shows some heat, intensity and density but also leaves room for nuanced tones of spice, crushed white pepper and limestone. This is an elegant and lasting wine from the not-always-easy 2017 vintage. In the end, this edition of the Castelletto offers a terrific interpretation of a hot and dry vintage. Perfumed and attractive nose with strawberries, roses and other flowers. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are polished and focused. Hints of fresh sage, too. Nicely crafted. Best after 2027.

Veglio's 2019 Barolo Castelletto is redolent of spice, menthol, licorice, sage and lavender. Incisive Monforte tannins and bright acids give the Castelletto its shape and a good bit of overall drive as well. I would cellar this for a few years and see what happens.
