Critical Acclaim

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2016 vintage Jun 30, 2021

A fruity style, this red boasts cherry, raspberry, earth, wild thyme, vetiver and tobacco flavors. Graceful and vibrant, displays finesse, despite robust tannins. All the elements are there, but need a few years to harmonize. Best from 2025 through 2045. 500 cases made, 150 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2016 vintage

The Mocali 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Le Raunate (with only 6,000 bottles released) is a soft and plush expression with bright cherry, dried forest berry, tilled earth and blue flower. There are subtle aromas of iron ore and candied orange peel as well. Like many of the other wines from this vintage, the mouthfeel is tight and rich, with young tannins that still need to unwind. The compact nature of the mouthfeel will serve the wine well as it continues its bottle evolution.

VN 93 Vinous 2016 vintage Nov 2020

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna delle Raunate from Mocali is the richer, darker and more oak-influenced wine of the portfolio. Crushed black cherries, brown sugar, cedar, sage and a hint of olive tapenade lift up from the glass. It boasts silky, elegant textures, offset by tart red/black berries laced with balsamic spices, as fine-grained tannins mount toward the close. Sour orange citrus and savory herbal tones help to further balance the expression, making for a structured yet fresh finale. In all honesty, I typically prefer the straight Brunello over the Raunate; but in 2016, Mocali created something very special here. (Eric Guido)

SP 93 Wine Spectator 2020 vintage

Cherry, strawberry, black pepper and a huge mineral vein mark this sleek, intense red. Shows tension, energy and harmony on a linear frame, and the finish extends with elements of Mediterranean scrub. Best from 2027 through 2043. 4,166 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

JS 92 James Suckling 2016 vintage Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Pronounced aromas of sandalwood, cloves and chocolate, layered on top of dried fruit and dried mushrooms. Some soy sauce notes. This is a full-bodied red with firm, dusty tannins. Slightly one-dimensional at the finish. Better after 2023.

JD 92 Jeb Dunnuck 2020 vintage

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is exuberant in the glass. It pours a deep ruby/red color and is lush with aromas of preserved cherries, lavender oils, strawberry compote, and fresh sage. Full-bodied and rounded on the palate, it's open-knit and approachable, with ripe, velvety tannins, even acidity, and a very nice finish. It's a very appealing wine that's going to offer a wide drinking window over the coming 8-10 years.

VN 92 Vinous 2020 vintage

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is mineral-rich, with a dark floral profile containing notes of graphite and crushed stone that come together with grilled herbs and savory spice. It's surprisingly juicy and fresh, with a cascade of ripe red plums and rosy inner florals energized by vibrant acidity. It leaves a tart cranberry concentration, finishing gently tannic yet full of youthful tension. Further time in bottle should help to lift its brooding aromatics—nicely done.

RP 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

The Mocali 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shows a classic bouquet for aged Sangiovese. There are some dried cherry aromas with grilled herb, pressed flower, licorice and sweet earth. You get a little bit of everything. The effect is well-balanced and fresh, and there is enough power to stand up to a slow-simmered meat sauce for pasta.
