Critical Acclaim
The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is a classy, elegant wine that captures all the pedigree of this great site. Silky, aromatic and light on its feet, the 2021 is sublime. Orange peel, mint and kirsch all take shape in a classy, translucent Barolo that delivers the goods. This is such a gorgeous and complete wine. Sadly, production was just 1,700 bottles.
With fruit sourced from a tiny 0.68-hectare parcel in Verduno, the Oddero 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is perfumed and graceful with lilac, iris root, cherry blossom and something sweet that reminds me of freshly squeezed blood oranges. That citrusy note develops as the wine opens in the glass. This is a beauty and shows Oddero's deft hand at making wines across many of Barolo's best sites. It matures in botte grande for 24 months, rendering hints of spice and earth. Production is 1,700 bottles.
Here’s an exciting new wine that officially brings Oddero to the village of Verduno. The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero has a note of sweet spice, milky white chocolate, almond cookie, redwood, iris root and candied orange peel. As far as Monvigliero goes, this expression has a slightly rustic side that gives it a distinct personality within this portfolio. The tannins are extremely polished, or “tumbled,” as someone who works with rocks might say. It glides clear over the palate. This inaugural release is represented by 2,300 bottles and 100 magnums. (Monica Larner)
A broad, fleshy red, evoking strawberry, cherry, rose, hay, mineral and menthol flavors. Balanced and supple in texture, with a firm, chalky finish. The persistent aftertaste dwells on the red fruit notes. Shows terrific integration and potential to age. Best from 2029 through 2045. 134 cases made.
A hint of vanilla marks this firm, linear red, which otherwise exhibits cherry, strawberry, floral and wild herb flavors. Elegant, with a dense layer of tannins lining the persistent finish. Needs a few years to integrate. Best from 2027 through 2043. (Bruce Sanderson)
The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a nuanced, brilliant wine. Sweet floral and spice notes are beautifully delineated. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely inner perfume, the 2020 is rather shy today. This delicate, classy Barolo needs time to be at its finest. Oddero bought this parcel in 2017 and used the fruit in their straight Barolo in vintages 2017, 2018 and 2019.
