Critical Acclaim

JS 97 James Suckling 2022 vintage

This is so classy, with finesse and sensitivity that are so mesmerizing. It’s delicate and almost weightless, with a beautiful and energetic fruit and acid balance. It’s medium-bodied and extremely long. Medium chewy. It goes on and on. Dark cherries, bark and lots of flowers in the finish. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years and beyond.

JS 96 James Suckling 2019 vintage Monday, July 4, 2022

A polished and reserved Castello with cherry, orange-peel and chocolate aromas and flavors. Tight and round-tannined, in a very subtle and curated way. The precision in this wine is impressive. Needs time to open. Try after 2025.

JS 96 James Suckling 2020 vintage Monday, August 7, 2023

Bright and floral on the nose with orange blossom to the vivid sliced cherry character. Medium body, with ultra-fine tannins that are supple and caressing. Gorgeous cooked peach pie and cherry aftertaste. Delicious to taste now, but better in 2028. (James Suckling)

A spicy and deep wine with intense, savory aromas of graphite, black pepper and smoke. Serious Chianti Classico with red and black cherries and minerals. It’s full-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and long, crisp acidity. There is stunning savoriness, length and tension. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2019 vintage September 30, 2022

Polished and balanced, this red offers cherry, plum, floral, iron and tobacco flavors, with a kiss of vanilla. Focused, exhibiting a dense line of tannins, yet this is balanced and complex. Youthful, so be patient. Best from 2025 through 2042. 1,800 cases made, 125 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

RP 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2019 vintage

The Barone Ricasoli 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio represent a new chapter in the history of this popular wine. The wine is 100% Sangiovese selected from various parcels. There has been a shift to fruit from higher elevations and cooler growing conditions. The three main soil types — sandstone, schistous galestro and limestone alberese — are all faithfully represented here. This wine is streamlined and elegant, and its freshness is superb. That crisp and tart character of Gaiole comes through clearly, along with polished mineral, clover, spice and forest fruit.

RP 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2022 vintage

Now identified by the Gaiole subregion on the back label, the Barone Ricasoli 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole Castello di Brolio reveals a beautiful bouquet that is packed tight with carefully ripened fruit. There is a sweet spot in terms of aromas with a hint of candied cherry that is folded into iris root, dried mint and spice. This generous Sangiovese ends with lasting freshness.

SP 95 Wine Spectator 2022 vintage

A core of ripe cherry, plum and pomegranate pervades this vibrant, complex red. A balanced version, with a firm grip on the finish complementing its fresh acidity. The long aftertaste echoes the fruit and evokes mineral and Mediterranean scrub elements. Best from 2026 through 2043. 2,750 cases made, 800 cases imported.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2020 vintage

One of the estate’s most important and successful bottles, the Barone Ricasoli 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio is plump and rich with warm-vintage layers of blackberry, juicy cherry, spice and soft earth. It ages in tonneaux for 22 months, of which only 30% is new oak, yet that is more than enough to impart savory tones, soft tannins and rich textural support to this full-bodied Sangiovese. Production is 33,000 bottles.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2022 vintage Oct 30, 2025

The Barone Ricasoli 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole Castello di Brolio offers plump primary fruit and lightly applied oak nuances that add volume and depth. This is one of the flagship wines of the estate, and it shows consistent results over the years. In many ways, it is the estate's most representative bottle, made with 100% Sangiovese harvested from the plots immediately adjacent to the landmark Brolio Castle on a mix of soils that includes Macigno del Chianti (sandstone), galestro (schist) and alberese (limestone). It offers a velvety close, some light spice and tart cherry over a velvety finish. It matures in tonneaux for 22 months with 20% new oak. Production is 30,000 bottles.

VN 93 Vinous 2022 vintage Jul 2025

The 2022 Chianti Clássico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio is a seriously beautiful, elegant wine. Ample on the palate, with gorgeous freshness, the 2022 is also very complete. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, macerated cherry, liquorice and mocha are some of the many nuances that start to take shape with some coaxing. What a gorgeous wine this is.

SP 92 Wine Spectator 2020 vintage Oct 31, 2023

This vivid red delivers telltale Sangiovese notes of iron, sanguine and tobacco that seep into a core of cherry and raspberry. Turns sleeker and more focused on the finish, where the fruit, mineral and savory elements converge. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,750 cases made, 400 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

WE 92 Wine Enthusiast 2020 vintage

Autumnal aromas of baking spices and the savoriness of a freshly brewed cup of coffee are balanced by a sweet, cherry vanilla scone and a peppery edge. Cherry brightens the palate, with the savoriness maintained by herbal and stony undertones. Bright acidity bounces around firm tannins.
