Tasting Notes
Translucent garnet-ruby with orange brick hints along the rim. Complex and aromatic on the nose, releasing scents of dried red cherries, wild raspberries, crushed red roses, pipe tobacco, leather, and orange peel. Medium-to-full-bodied and taut on the palate, presenting concentrated flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, star anise, and damp earth. Driven by firm, tight Nebbiolo tannins and a vibrant beam of cooling acidity that carries through a long, savory, and mineral-laced finish.
Producer Notes
Founded in 1975 by Rino Sottimano and managed today by his son Andrea, Azienda Agricola Sottimano spans 18 hectares across premier crus in Neive and Treiso. Sourced from the historic 'Basarin' MGA vineyard in Neive—planted on high-elevation, steep clay-limestone soils—the estate practices organic viticulture without herbicides or pesticides. Fermentation relies on native yeasts with extended skin contact (up to 40 days), followed by aging on fine lees in French oak barrels without racking or sulfur additions until bottling, creating expressive, age-worthy Barbarescos.

Aromas of dried cherries, cocoa, cinnamon and bark with hits of dried rose petals. Medium- to full-bodied and structured with taut but fine tannins, that last long. Shows tension and depth. Lingering finish. Drink after 2026.
Displaying a bright red-orange hue, the 2023 Barbaresco Basarin comes from 45-year-old vines in this four kilometer long site purchased by the estate in 2014. The wine offers bright spice notes of cinnamon, fresh tobacco leaf, anise, and black raspberries. Medium-bodied, it carries excellent tension and coiled energy, with even tannins and a refreshing finish. Drink 2026-2040.
The 2023 Barbaresco Basarin is deep, resonant and super-expressive. Expansive contours wrap around a core of blue/purplish fruit. Lavender, menthol, espresso and 5picebox all meld together in the glass, with floral top notes that add finesse. This sensual, layered Barbaresco is a total delight. It is the most approachable for the 2023 Barbarescos at this address.
The Sottimano 2023 Barbaresco Basarin leans into the dark, generous fruit of the warm growing season, with ripe blackberry and black cherry at its core. The wine shows an accessible side with soft, furry nuances that lend an inviting texture to the bouquet. Earthy notes of iris root and licorice add complexity, while the tannins are polished and beautifully integrated, giving the wine a smooth, harmonious finish. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in large oak casks. Production is 9,000 bottles.
With fruit from the village of Neive, the 2020 Barbaresco Basarin is a generous and fleshed-out wine with soft fruit tones and plenty of bold cherry. Sottimano Maggiore likes to work with ambient yeasts and submerged cap. This is a fruit-forward Nebbiolo from a warm vintage. It shows above average concentration, but not by much, and feels quite smooth and supple to the palate. Production is 9,000 bottles.
A spicy wine with graphite, licorice root, strawberries, red cherries and leather. Juicy and toasty on the medium-bodied palate, showing very fresh acidity and well-handled, velvety tannins. Drink or hold.
A dense red, solidly built and displaying mint, eucalyptus, vanilla and resin flavors, while berry and cherry fruit elements struggle to emerge. Despite its freshness and length, this is locked up tight. Best from 2026 through 2042. 400 cases made, 120 cases imported.
