Critical Acclaim

VN 94 Vinous 2018 vintage Aug 2020

The 2018 Syrah Estate is a fabulous example of both the estate and everything Ballard Canyon is about. Fabulously deep and expansive, the Estate captures tremendous character. The flavors are dark, brooding and so rich. Black cherry, plum, leather, spice and dried herbs abound. The 50% whole clusters are nicely integrated, but the tannins are equally imposing, so a measure of patience is critical. All of the other Syrahs in this range are compelling, but to me the Estate is the most complete. It’s a reference-point wine for the appellation.

RP 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2021 vintage

The 2021 Syrah Estate is bright and approachable. Tarry touches give way to blackberry, blueberry, violet and bitter chocolate aromas. The palate is full-bodied and powerful with a youthfully dense core of fruit, finely grained tannins and bursts of acidity to refresh the floral finish. 2,500 cases were produced.

VN 93 Vinous 2021 vintage

Just bottled, the 2021 Syrah Estate Grown is a very pretty wine that shows both the influence of the cooler growing season and the lighter touch that defines the Stolpman wines these days. A rush of sweet floral and spice notes melds into a core of red/purplish berry fruit, licorice, leather and tobacco. The aromatics are especially beguiling. I imagine the 2021 will be even more expressive once it has had time to settle down.

WE 92 Wine Enthusiast 2018 vintage 5/1/2020

Clean aromas of boysenberry, wet stone and sifted ash show on the lively nose of this bottling. The palate is intensely grippy with earthy tension, combining freshly smashed berry flavors with aromatic rosewater flavors and just a hint of game.

JD 90 Jeb Dunnuck 2018 vintage August 4, 2020

Blended with 2% Viognier, the 2018 Syrah Estate Grown reveals a saturated purple color as well as a lively bouquet of spiced red and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, and a touch of cedary herbs. Medium-bodied, fresh, and focused, it’s a classy Syrah to drink over the coming 7–8 years.
