Critical Acclaim
This ripe style is fresh and harmonious, delivering plum, cherry and boysenberry fruit, with accents of earth, iron and eucalyptus. Supple in texture, with a beautifully integrated structure and long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2043. 29,667 cases made, 5,833 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is shaping up to be a jewel of a wire, despite showing some tightness because of its recent bottling just a week prior to this tasting. Dark fruit, spice, leather and tobacco are layered in a Riserva that exudes tension, energy and sheer power. (Antonio Galloni)
A youthful wine full of fruit, showing intense fresh roses, black cherries and plums. The generous nose is supported by a lush, supple palate with medium body. Velvety tannins with a chalkier finish and refreshing length. Drink or hold.
This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine’s enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth. (Monica Larner)
The nose is sweetly enchanting, with aromas of milk chocolate, Mission figs, dried cherries, orange peel and wild mint. On the palate, pomegranate joins more cherries, figs and sweet citrus, while undertones of bitter cocoa provide balance. Tannins are refined, but substantial.
Showing a soothing dark color and rich concentration, the Marchesi Antinori 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori draws its fruit from across the appellation. This is a silky, satiny wine with good fruit and dimension and an accessible personality. It closes with sweet tannins and a hint of elegant chalkiness for good measure.
Full of savory, umami flavors, this red evokes earth, leather, sweet spice, cherry, plum and Szechuan peppercorn notes. Firm and dry, with broad tannins and a lingering kernel of cherry. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2027 through 2040. 5,250 cases made.
