The 2017 Syrah Duvarita Vineyard is deep, fleshy and super-expressive. Even so, the tannins are just as formidable. Time in the glass lets the dark red fruit slowly open up, while veins of salinity take on greater presence. More than anything else, I admire the marriage of sheer textural intensity and richness with the mineral-driven cut that is such a Duvarita signature. The 2018 is positively stellar. The 2017 Syrah Duvarita Vineyard has an opaque ruby-purple color and singular aromas of boysenberry and Morello cherry fruit with nuances of violet, lilac, licorice and exotic spices. The palate is full-bodied with concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit, grainy and fresh with a very long, very layered finish. 165 cases were made.

Also beautiful, the 2017 Syrah Duvarita Vineyard comes from a site just outside the western border of the Sta. Rita Hills. There are 165 cases made and it has pure red, blue, and black fruits, lots of peppery herbs and meaty notes, medium-bodied richness, and a rounded, layered texture. It reminds me of a top Saint-Joseph. Drink it over the coming decade.
