Critical Acclaim

VN 96 Vinous 2018 vintage

Aged for 18 months in 61% new oak barrels and foudres (plus 4% in stainless steel tanks), the 2018 Mas La Piara is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedès. It displays a garnet hue with a purple sheen. The reductive bouquet offers red fruit notes of cherry and sour cherry, along with ash undergrowth and mushroom. Dry, compact and fine-grained or the palate, the juicy flow leads to a complex and joyful mouthfeel. The 2018 has great aging potential.

WE 95 Wine Enthusiast 2018 vintage 7/1/2023

Deep black-cherry to the eye, this Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedès has a bouquet of raspberry, violet talc and fennel pollen. Well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity offer a gorgeous backdrop for flavors of fruit and spice, with a touch of black olive paste. (Mike DeSimone)

JS 95 James Suckling 2019 vintage

Excellent freshness and intensity of meaty blue fruit here with currants, blackberries, dark plums, peppercorns and chocolate, with dark earth and some spearmint. Crushed stone minerality on the palate, with fantastic freshness. Full-bodied, tight, caressing and perfectly ripe tannins. Already delicious, but will age beautifully. Cabernet sauvignon. Mas La Plana has become more refined and precise. Drink or hold.

SP 93 Wine Spectator 2019 vintage

An enticing red, exuding fragrant sandalwood and star anise notes, this is plush on the palate, offering generous flavors of black plum reduction, baked bitter cherry, tea leaves and a subtle base note of fresh earth. Defined by sculpted, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity, this is seamlessly knit and harmonious. Drink now through 2034. 6,262 cases made, 450 cases imported.

RP 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2018 vintage

The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Mas La Plana was produced from a cool and late harvest of the vines planted between 1964 and 1979 in the Mas La Plana estate in Penedès at 225 meters in altitude on gravel, sand and clay soils. It fermented in 10,000-liter oak foudres with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels, 55% of them new, 20% in foudre and 25% in stainless steel for nine to 15 months, depending on the plot. This is very peppery and spicy, cool and varietal with a Mediterranean accent. This is the vineyard where they started with regenerative agriculture. It’s minty and has fine-grained tannins, spicy, herbal and fresh, reflecting a cooler year with more rain. In 2016, they introduced oak vats for the fermentation. They are also going for larger volumes for élevage and some wine kept in stainless steel. The best vintages at Mas la Plana are always the cooler years. 76,439 bottles, 1,643 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in October 2020.

RP 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2019 vintage

The herbal and peppery 2019 Mas La Plana is a textbook Mediterranean Cabernet Sauvignon with notes of Italian green peppers and blackberries. Despite the 14.5% alcohol, it feels medium-bodied and with a certain lightness. 70,944 bottles and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2021.

SP 91 Wine Spectator 2018 vintage July 31, 2023

Toasty on the nose, but more subtle on the palate, an accent for the ripe red currant, cured tobacco, plum sauce and milled pepper notes. A well-knit, medium- to full-bodied red, with a tang of orange peel acidity throughout and a mineral-laced, lightly chewy finish. Drink now through 2028. 6,706 cases made, 100 cases imported.
