Critical Acclaim
The 2021 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1953. Opaque ruby-black in color, this has some rubbery touches on the nose that give way with time to blackcurrant, garrigue, cocoa powder, laurel leaves and charcuterie. The palate is lighter on its feet than the nose leads you to believe, with alluringly floral flavors and soft herbal undertones. It has a surprisingly refined texture, impressive freshness and a very long finish. Offer it 3–5 years in bottle. (Erin Brooks)
Broad-shouldered yet retains a sense of refinement, with brooding black cherry and red currant flavors that take on mocha, sandalwood and orange peel accents. Drink now through 2033. 600 cases made. (Tim Fish)
Opaque ruby-black in the glass, the 2022 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is as poised and graceful as this variety can possibly be. The nose is driven by aromas of roasted plums, cassis and toasted coconut with dark spice-driven undertones. The palate is full-bodied, powerful and characteristically dense, offering a blocky, opaque fruit flavor that melds with an intriguing, perfumed, energetic lift. The sheer class and authority of the Hayne site peer through here—albeit in a more glossy manner than found in other varieties—and finishes with a combination of chewy tannins, balancing acidity and decadent dark fruits. (Matthew Luczy)
The 2022 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is full of character. Earthy, floral and savory notes dominate at this stage, as do bright acids and searing tannins. This dense Petite, with terrific depth and textural intensity, is sure to be long lived. Yields were a measly 1.1 tons per acre. 92-95 points. (Antonio Galloni)
