The 2019 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese is from 70-year-old vines in the Bußlay (Busslay) plot, a former top vineyard in Erden, and opens with a deep, pure, fresh and crunchy/earthy slate aroma intermixed with delicate, flinty and clear, crisp Riesling aromas. Filigreed, sweet and finessed on the palate, this is an intense and concentrated Spätlese of great class, with a complex, salty-piquant and crisp finish. The acidity is quite high and sharp here but meets the concentrated, sweet fruit, making this a kind of Eiswein among the Spätlese wines. The wine is really crisp and green and needs years to age. Fascinating but dangerous if you are not used to this kind of acidity. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)
